Im Schatten der Großen [In the shadow of the Great Ones] is a concept of Lied performance by comparing different classical art songs that were written by various composers based on a single poem, with the hope of opening a discussion or contemplation about the exclusivity of fame and the quality of musical composition.
Goethe’s Über allen Gipfeln ist Ruh has been chosen as the first featured poem in this series. Based on his letter exchange with Charlotte von Stein, Goethe possibly wrote the text in early September 1780 onto a wooden wall of a hunting lodge at Kikelhahn, a mountain not far away from Ilmenau in Thuringia.
